When you apply, you have all the odds stacked against you- cut off marks which are impossible to reach, screening out processes that seem like they are designed to specifically keep you out, and too many students all vying for the same spot as you are.

Honestly, your real struggle at a Nigerian university begins when you start applying for admission, and how you perform can potentially make or break you.

Nigerian universities may be hard to get into, but it’s not an impossible feat to achieve, if you follow the right guidelines. Where would you find such guidelines? This particular article on guidelines for entrance into nigeria university is where.

General Guidelines For Gaining Admission Into Nigerian Universities

  • Apply for less competitive courses
  • Apply to more accessible universities
  • Don’t line up for top choice universities
  • Have the proper requirements
  • Make blended choices

Apply For Less Competitive Courses

The stiffer the competition for a course, the harder it may be for you to gain admission to study that course, with thousands of other students applying for it.

Don’t just follow the trope of students wanting to study generic go-to courses like Law, Medicine, or any branch of Engineering because it looks good on paper.

Instead, go for a solid less competitive course that preferably let’s your qualification shine through during the application.

However, if you must go for any of those competitive courses, do so in a University where you have a high chance of gaining admission.

Apply To More Accessible Universities

This point may come as a surprise to you, especially if you had your heart set on applying to top universities like UNILAG (University Of Lagos) or UNILORIN (University of Ilorin) but, there are other great universities in Nigeria you could apply for which are less cutthroat, less competitive, and actually have recruitments applicants can readily and easily meet.

So, rather than line up every year hoping that you will get selected out of millions of students, you could gain admission now, by widening your scope and looking into these other good accessible universities in Nigeria.

Don’t Line Up For Top Choice Universities

To reiterate the previous point, there are top choice universities in Nigeria, applicants are most likely to apply for every admissions’ year.

For these top universities, applicants’ desires for them are often fuelled by stories they’ve heard from other students or the common notion that these universities alone, offer the best education in the country.

No doubt that these are all great universities, but cancelling out other schools, to stand in line for schools you may not get into is a sure way to not enter the university, if that’s what you’re going for.

Rather than do the above, find other universities that also offer the best training for the course you want to do, and apply to those ones.

Even if your options include these top universities, you can mix up your selection, so that you can have more options.

Have The Proper Requirements

Competition and putting all your eggs in one basket may deter your plans of gaining entrance to a Nigerian university, but that’s not the only thing.

Failing to meet the general university requirements for applicants, can do the same damage.

You need to have the proper requirements like –

  • Minimum of 5 credits in your Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSCE/GCE), ordinary level credits gotten in 2 sittings only.
  • Minimum score of 200 in the Joint Tertiary Matriculation Examination (JTE) out of 400 marks.
  • A minimum merit pass score in the National Certificate of Education (NCE), National Diploma (ND), and any other advanced level certificates.

Make Blended Choices

You can make blended choices during your application, by following the directives given by the Joint Admissions and  Matriculation Board, for applicants to choose two universities, two polytechnic,  and two colleges of education, while sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This directive is for both public and private university admission aspirants.
