2020 WAEC Result Statistics With 65% Passed Rate

The 2020 WAEC May/June results recorded a 65% pass in the exams. Also, the performance statistics show that 86.99% of the candidates had credit in 5 Papers.

This is an improvment from the 2019 result which shows a 64% credit pass in English Language and Mathematics.

While most students received  their results, others haven’t, due to errors being noticed in registration and examinations, and malpractice.

Along with the majority of results released by WAEC, were some important statistics, intended to keep candidates informed about their results.

General WAEC Result Performance Statistics

The general performance statistics discuss the number of candidates who registered for the exam,  the number who wrote the exam, and scores and results.

1: 1,738 WAEC results were withheld in the 2020 WAEC exam.

2: 1,549,463 candidates took the exam from 19,129 centers in Nigeria.

3: 65,483 candidates got credits and above in five subjects and 46,824 made credits and above in six subjects.

4: 131,485 candidates that took the WAEC examination had fully processed and released results.

5: 1,738 candidates’ results are unreleased, due to some subjects being processed for errors found during candidates’ registration and examinations.

Note: The council is promptly processing these errors so that candidates who are affected by withheld results, get their results soon.

6: 34,664 candidates who took the exam, scored a minimum of credits in five subjects and above, including in English Language and General Mathematics, representing   26.01%.

WAEC Exam Statistics 2020

This statistics is a breakdown of the exam, how many candidates took it, and how the council is handling errors and malpractices during the exam.

The records show that 1,538,445 candidates took the 2020 WAEC  examination.

A break down of the 1,538,445 shows:

1: 1,338,348 students, made credit and above in a minimum of any five (5) subjects, excluding English Language and/ or Mathematics. This number represents 86.99% of the candidates.

2: 1,003,668 candidates made credits and above in a minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, representing 65.24% of the candidates.

3: Of 1,003,668,  497,139;  49.53%  of the students were male candidates, while 506,529; 50.47% of the students were female candidates.

In the 2019 WAEC/ WASSCE exam, the percentage of candidates in the category for students who made credits and above in a minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, was 64.18%. Compared to the 2020 results, there was a marginal 1.06% improvement in candidates’ performances in this aspect.

The WAEC results of 215,149) candidates, who took the exam, are being withheld by the West African Council because of suspected examination malpractice, this represents 13.98% of the total number of candidates who took WAEC.

The alleged cases of malpractice are being investigated by the council, and whatever is found during investigations, will be handed over to the Committee of the Council for the final verdict.

Students who were affected by the withheld results will be informed of the Committee’s decision through their respective schools.

WAEC Candidates Statistics

This is statistics for the category of candidates who took the 2020 WAEC examination, how many recognized Nigerian secondary schools registered candidates, and which West African countries participated.

1: From 19,129 accredited Nigerian secondary schools,  1,549,740 candidates registered for the WAEC exams.

Candidates from other West African countries, like Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea, who share Nigeria’s Secondary School Curriculum, also partook in the exam.

2: The number of Special Needs candidates, who were registered for the exams, was 4,280.

3: A breakdown of the 4,280 –  230 visually impaired candidates, 745 candidates had hearing impairment, 2,852 candidates suffer from low- vision,  38 candidates were spastic cum mentally challenged, while the other 58 candidates were physically challenged.

Comparison: WAEC May/June Results Statistics For 2019 And 2020:

1: A total of 1,538,445 candidates registered for the WAEC examination from 19,129 recognized secondary schools in 2020 while 1,590,173 candidates registered for the WAEC examination from 18,639 recognized secondary schools in Nigeria in 2019.

2: In 2019, 180,205 special needs candidates registered and sat for the exam- 299 visually impaired candidates, 842 impaired hearing, 158 low vision, 75 spastic cum mentally challenged, and 85 physically challenged.

The number of special needs candidates in 2020 was 4,280 who were registered for the examination – 230 visually impaired candidates, 745 candidates had hearing impairment, 2,852 candidates suffer from low- vision,  38 candidates were spastic cum mentally challenged,  the other  58 candidates were physically challenged.

3: Of the 1,590,173 students who actually took the WAEC examination in 2019, 822,098 males (51.70%) and 768,075 (48.30%) females.

The 2020 West African School Certificate Examination was taken by 1,549,463 candidates, 786,421 males, and 763,402 females.

4: 180,205 candidates’ results were withheld in the 2019 WAEC examination while 1,738 WAEC results were withheld in the 2020 WAEC exam.

5: In 2019, 64.18% of candidates who sat for the exam got 5 credits, which was a 14.18% from the 50% of 2018.

6: 2020 candidates made 65.24% made 5 credits,  a marginal 1.06% improvement in candidates results.

7: In 2020 1,338,348 students, got credit and above in a minimum of any five (5) subjects, excluding English Language and/ or Mathematics. This number represents 86.99% of the candidates.

8: In 2019, 1,309,570 candidates made credit and above in a minimum of 5 subjects, with or without English language and/or Mathematics representing 82.35%  of candidates.

9: 1,003,668 candidates made credits and above in a minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, representing 65.24% of the candidates in 2020.

10: 1,020,519 candidates representing 64.18% made credit in 5 subjects including English and Mathematics in 2019.

11: The 2020 WAEC results recorded a 65% pass in the exams while 2019 WAEC results recorded a 64% credit pass in English Language and Mathematics.

State WAEC  Statistics For The Years 2018-2019

These statistics compare  WAEC results for the years 2018 and 2019 in various states.

It covers state by state results in the exam, which states ranked the highest, and the performance of candidates in both private and public schools.

2018 State WAEC Statistics: Private And Public Schools

Lagos State had the highest number of both public and private candidates to take the WAEC exam in 2018.

109,798 private candidates sat for WAEC  in 2018

47,122 of that 109,798 made 5 credits and above including the English Language, 47,434 had 5 credits and above including in Mathematics.

37,184 candidates had 5 credits and above including Mathematics & English Language. The percentage of students in this category is 33.81%.

The statistics for the top 5 states in the 2018 WAEC examination in both private and public schools show:

1. Abia:

In Abia State, 599 private schools and 47,468 public school candidates sat for the exam.

352 private candidates and 41,767 public candidates made 5 credits and above including in the English Language.

342 private candidates and 42,665 public candidates made 5 credits and above including in Mathematics.

18,484 public candidates and 308 private school candidates made 5 credits and above including in Mathematics and English.

The percentage of public candidates who made 5 credits and above including in Mathematics and English is 82.28%.

The percentage of private candidates who made 5 credits and above including in Mathematics and English is 51.42%.

2. Anambra:

In Anambra, 947 private schools and 44,550 public school candidates sat for the 2018 WAEC examination.

28,413 public and 210 private school candidates made 5 credits and above including in the English Language.

32, 456 public candidates and 145 private candidates made 5 credits and above including in Mathematics.

22,897 public school and 117 private school candidates scored 5 credits and above including in English Language and Mathematics.

51.90% of public candidates made 5 credits and above including in Mathematics and English.

7.7% of private candidates who made 5 credits and above including in Mathematics and English.

3. Edo

In Edo, 1,290 private candidates and 59,831 public candidates, sat for the 2018 WAEC examination in Edo state.

40,822 public school candidates and  260 private candidates scored 5 credits and above including in the English Language.

65,005 public school candidates took the 2018 WAEC examination in Rivers.

6,187 public school candidates took the 2018 WAEC examination in Rivers.

Statistics For Top Ranking States In 2019 WAEC Examination

In the 2019 WAEC examination, Abia, Anambra, and Edo states led the other Nigerian states.

Jigawa, Zamfara, and Yobe were the bottom 3 states.

Lagos State was the only state in the South-West that made the top 10 list.

Kaduna emerged as the best northern state finishing on the 12th.

Just like in the  2018 WAEC examination, the top 10 states at the 2019 examination are still Abia, Anambra, Edo, Rivers, Imo, Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, and Ebonyi states.
